The Unmentioned Benefits of Being a Teacher

I'm sure many of us have seen Taylor Mali's Slam Poetry on "What Teachers Make." He speaks about how teaching is far more that just a salary. I am positive that almost anyone who watches his video is moved and inspired by what he says.

About a year ago when I was perusing a book store, I found a book titled "What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World" by Taylor Mali. I was so ecstatic to find his book because I had seen his video many times. I bought the book and read it in a day! If you thought the videos were good, wait until you read his writing and more of his poems inspired by things like teachable moments, challenges and breakthroughs of being a teacher and writings of funny student remarks and memorable moments that assured him he was a teacher for the right reasons. He writes his book in such a way that you feel you are sitting in a coffee shop next to him carrying on a conversation

One of the chapters of his books is about What Teachers Get. These are the benefits that professors often do not teach us about when becoming a teacher. These are the benefits that warm your heart; it's the little things.

Taylor Mali writes,
"No one becomes a teacher to get rich. Anyone who chooses to enter this profession does so for other reasons, most of which are priceless (either because no amount of money can purchase them or because they are utterly without monetary value). Hilarious misspellings, thank-you notes years later, confessions of tipsy parents at holiday parties, and the laughter of children: these are some of the lucrative benefits that are never mentioned in anyone's contract. And, of course, there are the holiday presents.

The little things are what make our hearts smile everyday! I have countless memories from internship of things kids say, do and give to you. Here are a few of my stories that make my experience so rewarding.

In the fall, as I was teaching about Thanksgiving and how many people will say what they are thankful for or a prayer at the dinner table, I asked, "What is something we might say then at Thanksgiving table?" to a group of kindergarten, grade one and two students. The first hand shot up and answered with "Please pass the turkey?"

One day the Grade 2's journal prompt was "When I grow up..." This is what he wrote: (if this isn't the best thing you've ever read, I don't know what is!)
When I am a grown up I will find a girlfriend and I would
cook supper for her and I would drive her to work.
It was the continuous support from parents and gaurdians that warmed my heart. Whether is was them thanking me for becoming a teacher or acknowledging me for doing a good job teaching their child.

I loved all the drawings I got from the children, I can't see myself throwing them away. I've created a binder of all the drawings and sweet things my students made for me!

It's the funny stories the children will tell you about what happened the night before or over the weekend. It's the funny things kids say like, "Miss Leurer, I think that you are secretly a princess because your hair looks pretty today." or, "Miss Leurer, I just gave myself a wedgie. Wanna see?"

It was the thirty individual hugs and hand drawn pictures I received after returning from my grandpa's funeral.

These are the things that you cannot get anywhere else. These are the precious moments and memories you can only get by being a teacher. They are absolutely priceless!

If you haven't already, I would recommend you get this book. It is compelling, thoughtful, and a little bit emotional.

I would also like to hear some of your stories in the comments about things children may have said or done through your experience!

Tech Task #5 - One Second Story

For the last part of Tech Task #5, I decided to do Video Assignment 213. I guess when I initially read the assignment, I read it wrong. So I ended up creating a compilation of one second snippets from my weekend. I just realized now that it was to only be just one second all together. So, first we have my 30 seconds of one second stories montage.

And lastly, we have the real purpose of the assignment. The power of one second. This video is of my little friends in South Africa. (Its actually 3 seconds long because YouTube wouldn't let me upload anything less than 3 seconds.)

Tech Task #5 - Lyric Typography Poster

I chose Design Assignment 259 where you make a lyric typography poster. You need to start by choosing a favourite line from a song and illustrate it using only typography!

Here is the one I made using Mumford & Sons lyrics from "Awake My Soul."

Mentorship Skype Chat

Yesterday was the first time I connected with Kelli Holden and her grade four class at Millgrove Early Years in Spruce Grove, Alberta! It just so happened that our first meeting was on Digital Learning Day! Awesome!

Kelli didn't tell the students where I am from, so we started our Skype chat by having them guess where I am from! They came up with Yes or No questions to ask me so that they could discover my location! It was so fun! They guessed where I live in four questions I believe it was! They had so many great, thoughtful questions!

"Does your province border an ocean?""Does your province border two other provinces?""Are you in the same time zone as us?""Is your provincial flower the Western Red Lily?"

Like I said, GREAT questions! I introduced myself and let them know the qualities that I have and why I wanted to become a teacher! Then they showed me all the technology they have and use in their classroom!

I really enjoyed Skyping with the class. I have been looking through and commenting on many of their blogs! I cannot wait to connect again!

Fantastically Fun Fonts!

As I make my way through different class projects and presentations, I've had many of my colleagues ask me how I get such awesome fonts in my work! I couldn't be more excited to share! I think I am addicted to downloading different fonts. Here are a few of my favourites at the moment: (click to go to download page)

I find fonts all over the place. Pinterest has many good links to free downloadable fonts. I also like to browse on the font sites as well.

Once you find a font you like, you will need to download it, simply by clicking the download button. Then, I go the my Downloads folder on my computer. Most fonts come in a .zip file, so you need to extract the files. You can extract the files and install to your computer in two easy steps!

1. Extract Files: right click on the .zip file. Click Extract All... Follow the next screen and press Extract again.
2. Your file will pop up in another screen. Right click on the file and then click Install. This will install the font into your computer!!

Now, go ahead and type with your new fun font!!
Once you have the font installed, you can delete the files in your downloads folder because you will no longer need them!

I hope this helps for those of you who were asking!! Have fun finding fantastic fonts!

Kaits :)

Tech Task #4- Bonus!

Here is the bonus activity I did for Tech Task #4. I used Google Maps to show how I got to school as a child.

The final task for Tech Task #4 was to redo a previous post and add a relevant picture or video. I only had two posts which did not already have a picture or video in it, so I chose to update my post Tech Task #3 - Connecting Through Blogs. I added a picture for the new blogs I follow. I also linked the pictures right to the websites!

Tech Task #4 - Visual Literacy 2

This is my second posting for Tech Task #4. I've been having a lot of fun creating these six word stories. I can totally see how meaningful they can be. I can see myself using this activity as a teacher to see how creative the students can be. I'm also liking everyone else's six word stories that I have been seeing!

This is a close up I took of the tide coming in at Cape Vidal, a beach we went to in South Africa. It was probably one of the best places I've ever been to. It was an overcast day, but the beauty of the beach still was able to shine through. I remember sitting on the beach the entire day taking in all the beauty of my surroundings! It was a phenomenal place! WOW!

Just for fun, here is another picture I took..it's just so beautiful!

This weeks assignment was to create two six word stories. Here is my first, which is more like a five word story. The picture is my own from my trip to South Africa this past May. I edited the picture and included the words. Happiness, for me, is making others happy and I believe those words compliment my picture well.

UPDATE!
I took Dean's wonderful suggestion to change the font colour and add a drop shadow! Look at what a different it makes! Thanks Dean!

Temple Run 2

I'm not normally one for spending hours and hours playing games. I grew up without any kind of video game devices so I've never really had the urge to play any type of video game. About a year ago I downloaded Temple Run and it was fun for a while but soon after I forgot all about it. This past week I went onto the App Store and saw that there was a Temple Run 2 so I decided I should give it a try. The game is about 100% better than the first version. The graphics are way better, the objectives are challenging which gives you the urge to keep on playing, and it's overall a lot more fun because there are more obstacles throughout the game! After tweeting how addicted I am to the game, I took Dean's suggestion to blog about it.

Within a day I reached my top score of 3,130,714. I was so proud of my score. My boyfriend thought he could play once and beat me. It took him a few days but finally today he texted me this this morning:

Needless to say, I've been trying to beat that all morning.

Here are a few screenshots I took while playing the game. I would recommend anyone to give this game a try. It's a whole bunch of fun!
Let me know in the comments if you have/tried this game, what you like about it, or don't like about it and what your top score is!

(I also posted this through the Blogger App on my iPhone!)
